Heal a little every day.

Dr. Corrine Harris

PhD, LCMHC, NCC

Hey y’all! My name is Dr. Corrine Harris and I am a clinical mental health counselor licensed in North Carolina and Georgia.

I have over 10 years of experience in the mental health field in a variety of settings including doctors’ offices, education settings, and private practice agencies. I am passionate about creating a safe space for clients to be their full selves as they work towards healing and wholeness and believe it is an honor to be part of your healing and mental health journey. I also consider it a privilege to be able to work with people of color, particularly Black women like myself, who deserve so much more love, grace, and compassion then we are given in the world. I believe that you are worthy of self-compassion and self-acceptance.

In my work with clients, I am mainly a client centered counselor who believes that the relationship between therapist and client is a powerful tool for growth and healing. I enjoy getting to know my clients and helping them feel comfortable in our work together so that they can have the vulnerability and trust to do the hard work of growing.

I consider myself a mirror in that I hold up a reflection of what the client is bringing into our work, consciously or unconsciously, as well as a partner on the therapeutic journey. I also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and work to infuse spirituality and faith into the therapeutic practice for clients who are interested.

I am a born and bred Southerner by way of Alabama (Roll Tide!) and Georgia. I love traveling (internationally whenever possible!), reading fiction books, watching Disney movies, listening to R&B music (old school and new school), and spending time with family and friends in my free time. My current self-care activities include riding in silence after work, connecting with loved ones, exercising, prayer, and doing guided meditations and breathing exercises.

About

Harris Counseling Services PLLC is a virtual counseling practice for people want support navigating different areas of their lives and balancing multiple responsibilities. We provide a safe, non-judgmental space for people to simply be, learn more about themselves, and work to reach healing, balance, and wholeness.

Our mission is to support the mental health of people through therapy and empower them to reach their goals and live full, intentional lives in community with others. It is an honor for us to be a part of your mental health journey. Life is hard, but you don’t have to walk through it alone.

We have a special interest and passion for supporting Black women who who desire to be seen, valued, and welcomed into the therapy space. We know that our humanity as black women is often missed or overlooked. We carry the dreams and needs of others in addition to our own. We are burdened with ideals of perfection while living as flawed individuals. As therapists, we recognize that Black women are rarely given the opportunity to be imperfect while growing and therefore work to provide a safe space for their growth and healing.

We work with clients to set goals that help them develop understanding, create skill sets to manage unhelpful thinking patterns, and create spaces for joy and connectedness. The practice is a good fit for client that are looking to work on topics such as:

Transitions

Balancing multiple roles and responsibilities

Relationship issues

Integration of faith into therapy

Stress

Self-exploration

Grief and loss

Frequently Asked Questions

What is therapy?

Therapy, aka as counseling, is the process of meeting with a trained professional to work to understand problems and come up with plans to fix your mental and emotional health. There are multiple approaches to therapy, but what’s most important in my opinion is finding a therapist that you trust and feel comfortable with.

How do I know if I need to see a therapist?

Anyone can come to therapy at any time. I like to say that there are no problems too small or too big for therapy. However, good indicators that it could be time to go to therapy would be noticing changes in sleep or appetite as well as changes in mood or behavior such as increased irritability, anxiety, sadness, guilt or worthlessness. Family and friends can be great supports, but another sign that it could be time to consider therapy would be if talking to your support system isn’t helping or you begin to need more support than your support system can provide. Another good reason to come to therapy is that it is a safe, confidential, and nonjudgmental environment where you can be honest and focus on what is best for you without outside biases.

What happens in therapy?

In therapy we meet and discuss your thoughts, feelings, and experiences and how they are impacting you. There is no couch you lay down on; instead, we work to create a safe, nonjudgmental environment where you feel comfortable exploring your feelings, learning about yourself and how you are in the world, and growing towards your goals. The therapeutic process typically includes talking, reflecting on feelings and past experiences, learning coping skills, and activities and homework that help you process what you’ve learned in session.

Can I use my insurance to pay for sessions?

In many cases, yes. We accept a variety of insurance plans in North Carolina as well as some Blue Cross Blue Shield plans from other states. You will need to check with your insurance company to see what your benefits are and if you have a deductible and/or co-pay that will be required. We use Headway for our insurance billing and you can check your benefits on their website at https://headway.co/does-my-insurance-cover-therapy. You can also use HSA and FSA funds to pay for therapy.

What will happen in my first session?

The first session is called the intake session. In the intake session I will ask you questions in a variety of areas such as current symptoms, mental health history, and family relationships, to gain an overall sense of who you are and what you are currently dealing with. We also talk about what you want your goals for therapy to be.
